Find Bitlocker Recovery Password For Personally Owned Device

Overview

End users are getting prompted for a Bitlocker recovery key on a personal device.

Prerequisites

Intended for users with personal machines that are getting prompted for a recovery key.

Resolution

Keys Being Backed Up Using A Ferris Account


  1. Open a web browser and goto the MyAccount.
  2. Login using Ferris email address and password.
  3. Click the Devices tab on the left side of the screen.

  4. Locate the device in question and click on it.

  5. Click View Bitlocker Recovery Key to see the device ID and Bitlocker recovery key.

Keys Being Backed up to Personal Microsoft Account  


  1. https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey 
  2. Login with your personal Microsoft account (more than likely is the Microsoft account that is used to log into the computer). 
  3. If there is an MFA prompt, approve it or submit a code.
  4. Look for the latest OSV (Operating System Volume) key for the device.
  5. Verify that the key ID matches the Recovery Key ID on the blue screen. Bitlocker Recovery Key Personal
  6. Input the Bitlocker recovery key. 

Note: If ITSC asks you for the key because it's in hardware repair, please send them  a clear screenshot or text version of the Recovery Key via email.    

Other Microsoft Accounts


  • If none of the keys are found in either account, try to remember if someone else assisted with the setup of the computer and see if they have a copy of the key.
  • If you are a transfer student, try any other Microsoft account from a previous educational institution using the 1st option above using that email address and password.
