Encrypt an Email in Microsoft Outlook

Overview

Emails containing restricted, sensitive and confidential information should be sent with encryption. Email encryption services transform a plaintext email message into a scrambled ciphertext format. Encrypting an email prevents cyber criminals from being able to read a message. This article explains how to send an encrypted email in Outlook. 

Prerequisites

Ferris email account.

Resolution

To send encrypted emails from Outlook, you can type “encrypt” anywhere in the subject line OR you may also use the encrypt button located in the new email message window. The encrypt button can be found on the ribbon under Options > Encrypt > Encrypt-only. Below are examples of both of these encryption methods. 

Using Encrypt in the Subject Line

Enter the following text in the email Subject line.

  • “Encrypt – Subject of email…” 
  • “Encrypt: Subject of email…”

Using the Encrypt Button

  1. From within a new email, select the Options tab.
  2. Select Encrypt.
  3. Select Encrypt-Only.
