Overview

This document explains the steps for setting and changing the PIN on an iPad.

Prerequisites

If changing an existing passcode, you must know the current passcode.

Resolution

  1. Open the iPad.
  2. Find the Settings icon.Image of Apple Settings icon.
  3. Tap on the Settings icon.
  4. In the left pane, select Touch ID & PasscodeImage showing the Touch ID & Passcode menu item.
  5. In the right pane, select Turn Passcode On if you are setting a first-time passcode or Change Passcode if you are changing your passcode. If changing your passcode, you will need to enter your existing passcode before you may continue.Image showing the Turn Passcode On and Change Passcode menu items.
  6. A dialog box appears. Enter the passcode you wish to use.Image showing the Apple dialog box for setting or changing a passcode.
Warning! If the passcode selected is easy to guess, the device will present a warning. In this case, seriously consider a more complicated passcode.  Easy to guess passcodes often contain repeating or sequential numbers or are information that is commonly known or easy to find.
  7. When you hit the last digit of the passcode, if you don’t get a warning that they passcode is easy to guess, the screen will present another box looking almost exactly like the first asking you to enter the new passcode.  This is to verify that you know the passcode.
  8. If the passcode you entered in step 6 is not the same as the passcode you entered in step 7, the system will take you back to step 6.  You’ll have to enter the new passcode in both dialog boxes again.
  9. Once the system has accepted your new passcode, you will need this passcode to access your iPad.
