Overview
With the change to having departments maintain their own departmental mobile devices, a department may find the need to switch a device from one iCloud (Apple ID) account to another as a device is moved from one person to the next. These instructions are in two parts. The first part is completed when the device is being taken from the previous user. The second part is completed when the device is being assigned to a new user.
Prerequisites
To remove the previous user, you will need to have the password for their Apple ID or iCloud account. Since we generally don't like asking people for their passwords, it is best to ask the previous user to enter this information so that the device is removed from their account.
Resolution
Part I: Sign Out of Apple ID on iPhone or iPad
Note: This step is completed with the assistance of the previous user.
- Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad
- Tap the Apple ID Name & Photo at the top of the screen.
- Scroll down to the bottom and then tap Sign Out.
- If you use the same account for iCloud and the iTunes Store, you’ll be asked to enter your Apple ID password. If you use two different accounts, you’ll be given three options:
- Sign Out of iCloud and Store
- Sign Out of iCloud
- Sign Out of Store
- Select which data from iCloud you want to keep on the device and which data you want to delete using the toggle switches.
- Generally speaking and in accordance with University policies:
- There should not be any personal data on the phone. However,
- To be certain that one person's personal data is not accidentally shared with the next person, you should not keep any data on the device.
- Tap Sign Out again to remove the Apple ID from your iPhone or iPad.
Part II: Sign In with a Different Apple ID on your iPhone or iPad
Note: This step is completed with the assistance of the new user.
Now that you have managed to remove the Apple ID that was previously being used on an iPhone or iPad let us now see how you can Sign In with a different Apple ID on the iOS device.
- Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap the Sign in to your iPhone/Sign in to your iPad link at the top of the screen. If you see a Name or Photo here, follow the steps outlined in Part I above.
- If you need to repeat the steps in Part I and the previous user is no longer available, please contact the IT Solution Center and ask them for assistance in clearing the Activation and in providing a reset on the phone.
- Enter the email address or phone number associated with the different Apple ID you want to Sign In with.
- Enter the password.
- If you already have some data on your device, such as Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, etc., you will be asked if you want to Merge that data with this new Apple ID for the new Apple iCloud sign-in. In keeping with University policies regarding sharing of personal data, in order to avoid accidentally sharing personal data, tap Don’t Merge.
