How to Enable the WiFi or Personal Hotspot on Your Smartphone

Overview

This article is for a person who needs to enable WiFi or Personal Hotspot on the cellular device.

Prerequisites

A cellular device with Hotspot as a service.

Note: Ferris smartphones have WiFi Hotspot as a service. If you do not have a Ferris phone, consult with your service provider.

Resolution

Jump directly to your phone type: Android iPhone

Android Devices

  1. Drag down from the top of the phone.
  2. Click on settings (the Gear icon).

  5. Tap on Mobile Hotspot (but not on the on/off toggle – that’s on the next screen).Android Mobile Hotspot and Tethering Menu with Mobile Hotspot circled and an "X" over the On/Off toggle.
  6. Toggle Mobile Hotspot on.Android Mobile Hotspot Menu with Green Check on On/Off Toggle and Network name and Password circled.
  7. Record the Network Name and Password to be used on devices connecting to the Hotspot.
  8. Your mobile hotspot is now ready to be used.
  9. Remember to turn Mobile Hotspot back off when done as it increased power usage and will drain your battery.
    1. To turn Mobile Hotspot back off, follow the same procedure except in step 6, toggle the hotspot off.

iPhone

  1. Open Settings.iPhone Settings Icon
  2. Select Personal Hotspot.iPhone Settings Menu with Personal Hotspot circled.
  3. Select Allow Others to JoiniPhone Personal Hotspot menu with Green Checkmark on Yes/No Toggle and Wi-Fi Password circled.
  4. Hotspot will have the same name as your phone. Record the Wi-Fi Password to be used on devices connecting to the Hotspot.
Note: To get your phone's name, go to Settings --> General --> About. The phone's name will be the top item in this display in the section entitled "Name".
  1. Your mobile hotspot is now ready to be used.
  2. Remember to turn Mobile Hotspot back off when done as it increased power usage and will drain your battery.
    1. To turn Mobile Hotspot back off, follow the same procedure except in step 3 toggle the hotspot off.
