Error -- You No Longer Have Rights to View This File

Overview

Customer is getting an error opening files from OneDrive (could be from their "Documents" folder if that folder is stored in OneDrive or while attempting to open the file from those locations) saying "The permissions on this file were updated and you no longer have rights to view this file. If you previously made changes to this file, they may not be saved."
Also, if OneNote is using the same OneDrive for local copies, items in OneNote may no longer sync.

Prerequisites

Resolution

To correct errors indicating that you do not have permission to view your own files from a OneDrive folder (FSU owned devices, your Documents are commonly linked to a OneDrive folder), follow the steps given below.

Please Note: If there are issues with OneDrive AND there are sync issues for OneNote file(s), this will also solve the OneNote sync issue. The same issue that is preventing from viewing an Office document will have issues from saving to OneDrive.
  1. Save all open files to an external storage (USB Drive, etc.)
  2. After you have saved all open files, close all Office applications except one.
Please Note: If OneNote is a part of the issue, use it as the open application for this process in Step 6 below. Doing this process for OneNote will resolve the problem for other Office applications but doing this process in other Office applications, for example, Word, will not necessarily resolve the issue for OneNote.
  1.  In the last open application, Sign out from Office applications.

  1. Close the application.
  2. There should not be any open Office applications. If there are any open Office applications still open, repeat the process from step 2 for each still-open Office application.
  3. Reopen any Office application (if OneNote is a part of the issue, reopen OneNote).
  4. Create a new file.
  5. From the menu bar, select File > Account (or Office Account if you’re using Outlook) > Sign In.
  6. Type the email address and password for your Office365 account.
  7. After entering login credentials, the connection to the files should be working without the error. Synchronization issue in OneNote should also be corrected.
